It was
otherwise referred to as "
Chikaneni " (Shikaneni) where boys only (girls fortunately were never
beaten in this manner), held each other hands & Othaigo (Mr.
Githaiga
- Math / Art & Craft Teacher - St. Michaels Primary School)
would whip our makalio's (rears)
During this dance, If our hands
separated from the ones our partners in crime (to console our aching makalios) ......
it meant Othaigo's had to start counting afresh until
one received 5 nice uninterrupted strokes.
Now, If you believe
this summer heat wave of Dallas,
Texas of 105° Fahrenheit day is hot, well our
"
things " were hotter & aching in pain. Yaani Othaish / Othaigo / Mr.
Githaiga, where was your mercy?
From
the word go, no
one performed this
dance perfectly without flaws on just the 1st strike. On that note, there was this hilarious character named
Eric Otieno, the typical noise maker & clown a class would have but huyu
yake ilikuwa of another level. Being the noisy he was, Eric practiced a
style know as "shorts ndani ya shorts ndani shorts ndani ya shorts".
He wore shorts kama za primary school ka zote za Nairobi province!
The first time
Othaigo made Eric
perform this dance, the kiboko landed on his Eric makalio's, where he pretended to
have felt the pain so badly. Othaigo being the true master in his game of vibokos,
he knew how to differentiate the resonance (kama tuning
fork in physics) of a kiboko ile imefika destination (makalio) na
ile bado kufika, ....... & besides that, it was quite evident &
awkward that
Eric did not release the hands of his partner in crime at the landing of the 1st
strike meaning " iko kitu ".
The 1st kiboko always landed to all boys like a " nguromo ya radi " (thunder) making one
scratch their makalios while questioning oneself; " hiyo 240 ama nini? " (What
was
that that hit me? Was that 240 Volts of mains electricity or what?).
Next, Othaigo
calmly tells Eric " kijana go to the toilet (restroom), I want you to remain
with one! One only! He emphasizes. Bring all the rest with you " One what ? .....
read on.
Alas! Maajabu ya musa! Yaani
how do I explain this ? Ok let me put it this way. Can you name the
primary school which you attended? Have you? Well, the color of shorts
your school wore was fully represented by Eric!
Beige khaki shorts (Jogoo
Road Primary & Rabai Road Primary),
Red shorts (St.
Michael's Primary), Grey Khaki shorts (Uhuru Primary),
Blue shorts (Martin Luther) ................ you name it ! Eric Otieno came
carrying shorts of almost all the neighboring schools. School outfitters?
Probably that's where he was from or something ....... coz those shorts were more than a handful.
Let me
simply put it this way - Mr. Githaiga's viboko's were simply " patent pending
"
to say the least! Honestly! Not only did Othaigo have a style in
kunyorosha watoto; Othaish had his own hair style - an Afro, plus his style of walking too.
